Privacy Policy

The short version

  • We collect what we need to run a walkie-talkie app: your account, your devices, and what you send.
  • Live voice passes through our servers in real time and isn’t stored, unless your Space turns on Rewind.
  • Rewind, transcripts and the AI assistant are off by default and clearly shown when on.
  • We don’t sell your data, and we don’t use it for advertising.
  • You can download your data or delete your account from inside the app at any time.

This policy explains how KeyUp (“KeyUp”, “we”, “us”) handles information when you use the KeyUp apps for Android phones and Wear OS watches, the KeyUp web app, and this website (together, the “Service”). If something here is unclear, email [email protected].

1. Information we collect

Account information

Your name or display name, email address, profile photo (if you add one), and sign-in details. If you create or manage a Space, we also keep its name, rooms, members and settings.

Device information

Device model, operating system and app version, language, time zone, and whether you use a phone, watch or browser. We use this to make the app work on your device and to fix compatibility problems.

Content you send

Text messages, voice notes, photos, and call information (who called whom, when, and for how long) in the Spaces and rooms you join. This content is stored so the people in that room can see it, until it is deleted.

Live voice audio

When you talk, your audio passes through our servers in real time to the other people in the room. Live audio is not recorded or stored unless Rewind is turned on for that room (see below). Noise filtering and voice detection run on your device first.

Rewind recordings and transcripts (optional)

A Space owner or admin can turn on Rewind for a room. When it’s on, recent talk in that room is recorded so members can replay it. If transcripts are also on, it’s turned into text, but only for people who allowed their voice to be transcribed. Everyone in the room sees an indicator while Rewind or transcripts are on. Both are off by default, and members are told before they talk in a room where they’re on.

AI assistant (optional)

A Space owner can add an AI assistant to a room. On every plan, the assistant uses the Space owner’s own account with an AI company. KeyUp does not have its own AI provider for this feature. The Space owner connects the AI company they choose (for example OpenAI or Anthropic) by adding an API key from that company. That company then handles each question under the Space owner’s account and under its own terms and privacy policy, which the Space owner accepts with that company. When the assistant is on and someone asks it something, the question and the room context the Space allows (for example, the last few minutes of room chat) are sent to that provider to generate a reply. Voice questions are transcribed first, so they need transcripts available for the Space. The assistant is off by default, clearly marked when present, and never receives anything from rooms where it isn’t enabled. We store the API key encrypted, never display it again, never send it to any device, and use it only to make the requests you ask for.

Push notification tokens

A device token from Firebase Cloud Messaging so we can alert you to incoming talk, messages and calls.

Diagnostics

Crash reports and performance data (such as connection quality, latency and error codes) so we can keep the Service reliable. Diagnostics never include the content of your messages, voice notes, photos, audio or transcripts.

Beta sign-ups on this website

If you join the beta, we collect your name, email, phone and watch model, how you plan to use KeyUp, and any note you add. We also keep a salted, one-way hash of your IP address and your browser’s user agent to prevent spam. We use this to invite you to the beta and send updates you agreed to.

2. How we use information

  • To provide the Service: deliver talk, messages, calls and notifications to the right people.
  • To run optional features you or your Space turn on, such as Rewind, transcripts and the AI assistant.
  • To keep the Service secure, prevent abuse, and enforce our Terms.
  • To fix bugs and improve reliability, using diagnostics that exclude message content.
  • To contact you about your account, the beta, security notices and (if you agreed) product updates.

We do not sell your personal information, share it for cross-context advertising, or use your content to train AI models.

3. Who we share it with

We share information only as needed to run the Service:

WhoWhyWhat
People in your Space and roomsThat’s the point of the appYour name, photo, talk, messages and presence in the rooms you join
Hosting and infrastructure providersTo store data and relay audioData needed to run the Service, under contract and our instructions
Firebase Cloud Messaging (Google)Push notificationsDevice token and minimal notification data
The AI company your Space owner chose (for example OpenAI or Anthropic), under the Space owner’s own account with themOnly when the Space enables the AI assistantYour question and the room context the Space allows
AuthoritiesOnly when legally required, or to protect someone’s safetyThe minimum we’re required to provide

If KeyUp is ever involved in a merger or acquisition, your information may transfer to the new owner, who must keep honoring this policy or tell you before changing it.

4. Security

Connections between your devices and our servers are encrypted in transit (TLS). Stored data is protected with access controls, and our servers use encrypted storage. KeyUp is not end-to-end encrypted: our servers handle your voice and messages as they pass through, so features like rewind, transcripts and the AI assistant can work. Only a small number of people who run KeyUp can access stored data, and only to keep the service running or when you ask for help. No system is perfectly secure; if you find a problem, please tell us. Our Security page explains how.

5. Retention and deletion

  • Live audio is not stored.
  • Rewind recordings and transcripts are kept for your plan’s history window (7 days on Free, 90 days on Crew plans), or less if the Space sets a shorter window, then deleted automatically.
  • Messages, voice notes and photos stay until the sender or a Space admin deletes them, the Space is deleted, or your account is deleted.
  • Diagnostics are kept for up to 90 days.
  • Beta sign-up data is kept until the beta ends or you ask us to delete it.

Delete your account anytime in the app (You › Account › Delete account). We delete your account and personal data within 30 days, except where we must keep something for legal or security reasons. Messages you sent to shared rooms are removed or de-identified. Download your data anytime in the app (You › Account › Download my data), or email us.

6. Your choices and rights

You can access, correct, export or delete your information, and turn off optional features and marketing emails, at any time. Depending on where you live (for example the EU/UK or California), you may have additional rights, such as objecting to certain processing or appealing a decision. Email [email protected] and we’ll respond within 30 days. We won’t treat you differently for using your rights.

7. Children

KeyUp is not directed to children and is not for anyone under 13 (or the minimum age in your country). We don’t knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you believe a child has given us information, email us and we’ll delete it.

8. International transfers

We and our providers may process information in the United States and other countries. Where required, we use appropriate safeguards such as standard contractual clauses.

9. Changes

We’ll update this page when our practices change and change the “Last updated” date. If a change is significant, we’ll tell you in the app or by email before it takes effect.
